CHARACTER

Name: Son Goku
Canon: Dragon Ball Z
Gender: Male
Age: 43 (physically 35 due to death)
Wing Color: White

Canon Point: Age 778; Post Battle of Gods. After Goku loses to Bills, the God of Destruction. Canonly this takes place five years after the end of the Majin Buu saga.
Canon Point Explanation: This is the closest point to the end of the Dragon Ball Z series before Age 784 in which Goku leaves to train Uub.
History: http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Goku

Personality: Kind, courageous, powerful, heroic, naïve, gluttonous, brutally honest, pure-hearted… This and more create a combination that is arguably the Shōnen genre’s greatest known protagonist. Hailing from the legendary Dragon Ball series, Son Goku embraces just about every trope of Shōnen tales.

Growing up as a curious yet sheltered boy in the mountains, his origins are literally out of this world. Born from the mighty warrior alien race known as the Saiyans, Kakarot (his true name) was dispatched to the distant planet Earth as a baby with the sole mission of eradicating its population, later selling the mass in space for an evil space tyrant. As a baby discovered in the mountains by who would become his adoptive grandfather (Son Gohan), he was ferocious and true to his Saiyan heritage, a menace that would have no doubt grown up to ultimately wipe out humanity as ordered. A fateful accident, however, where the young Saiyan fell and smashed his head and lost all of his memories would pave the path to the hero we all know today. Gone were his mean-spirited ways and it allowed Gohan to properly raise and train him into a polite (albeit naïve and sheltered) child. Renamed Son Goku, he was taught the basics of martial arts (surprisingly strong for his age!), that there were boys and girls and that whenever he ever met a girl that he needed to be extra polite to them.

Many of Goku’s traits from when he was a child have stuck with him through his later years, although he has fortunately outgrown some of his other sheltered tendencies. Humorously enough, he used to have to pat someone in their private parts or see them directly if he wanted to tell if someone was a boy or a girl or not. Goku also once had issues with learning how to count and only learned the basics after further training in his journey (he’d mistaken himself to be 14 years old at one point when later he corrected himself saying he was actually 12). A constant in his life has always been his severe naivety, which has led many to believe that the Saiyan was…for a lack of a better term, as stupid as he was innocent. Never knowing what a bath was until his lifetime friend Bulma had to bath him, not realizing that a ‘bride’ meant marrying someone when he promised to marry Chi-Chi until he was a young adult, and the list continues (but admittedly lessens as he grows older and wiser to the concepts of the world).

While giving off the impression of being stupid at times, however, that is far from the case. Once given an explanation of something, Goku has known to get a basic grasp of the material rather quickly, and is capable of formulating his own logical conclusions on many occasions. For example, techniques that would otherwise seem impossible to do in such a short amount of time, Goku has been able to achieve them with relative ease (but not without hard work). Such examples include using the Kamehameha Wave after only watching Master Roshi perform it once, his training to master the Kaio-ken power up with King Kai in under a year, or adapting and mastering an alien technique called Instant Transmission in which he can track a source of energy and immediately teleport there, with no limit of distance or speed.

His naïve attitude could also be seen as a blessing however, as Goku developed what would become an absolutely unbreakable will when it comes to his sense of justice. Unable to stand watching innocent people get hurt, it fuels his desire to protect his friends and family at any cost. He also possesses what some would consider a strange gift in managing to befriend some of the fiercest of foes and turning them into valuable allies. While usually fun and uplifting in nature, this kind demeanor of his has left him vulnerable multiple times to his enemies that would otherwise take advantage of him. This is mostly due in part to his trusting nature and seeing the good in others deep down where others would have a hard time finding it. While showing to be superior to most of his opponents at the pinnacle of their confrontations, Goku would still show them mercy and often fought to defeat them instead of kill them. Sparring some of his enemies like this has led to him almost being done in on countless occasions until he stops giving them chances. The greatest example of this is from the battle on planet Namek, where Goku defeated the same tyrant that enslaved his Saiyan race and inevitably committed genocide on it. Even after Frieza had slaughtered thousands of innocent people across the universe and even blew up his best friend (Krillin) before his eyes, he still spared the villain until given no choice when he was betrayed once more. This act of mercy hasn’t always gone south for Goku though, as sparing the lives of people like the formerly evil Piccolo and the Saiyan Prince, Vegeta, have led to their eventual change of heart and becoming powerful allies and friends.

While kind, courageous and confident in his own abilities, he hasn’t outgrown his brutal honesty which has infuriated many of his opponents and friends alike without quite meaning to. When knowing he is stronger than an opponent who believes themselves to be better, his innocent remarks consist of kind mannerisms but followed up by statements like “I promise not to hurt you too badly.” That hasn’t stopped him from taunting his opponents from time to time though. Other times include calling out his long-time friend Bulma on her age or undermining others methods when he’s either simply curious about them or may think them ridiculous. Despite his honest nature, however, Goku has never meant any true ill will to others unless they are villains of which can’t be redeemed through words. Goku is encouraging and openly praises both his friends and enemies alike for their strength and good qualities.

While his Saiyan blood inherently gives him an edge in battle, his technique has been honed and refined over the years through the course of many different teachers (Grandpa Gohan, Master Roshi, Korin, Kami and King Kai). Almost unparalleled in martial arts, Goku’s unique drive to better himself over the motivation of defeating his enemies has ultimately lead him to becoming one of the most powerful beings in the universe, eventually going toe to toe with forces of a divine nature. Never above learning from others if he feels that he can be taught something new he couldn’t discover on his own, it has given Goku multiple different techniques that he uses to his advantage in battle, and quite a few that he places his own unique variations on to increase their efficiency and accuracy. A popular one for Goku is the combination of his trademark Kamehameha Wave and Instant Transmission, charging up the attack only to suddenly warp directly in front of the opponent instantly with no chance of escape. In a filler episode of the anime, he has even combined the Super Saiyan transformation with a brief power boost from the Kaio-ken, simply dubbed the Super Kaio-ken. His manipulation of ki is astounding and only helps to boost his power to astronomical levels for multiple energy-based attacks. Lastly, being a Saiyan he is naturally driven towards competition, detesting pointless killing but still loving the thrill of a challenge and what would otherwise be a dangerous battle. He would rather fight an enemy at their full power and conquer them that way instead of powering through them before they had a fair chance. That isn’t to say that he hasn’t been influenced by his rage before, as it was the cause of his initial transformation into a Super Saiyan in the first place. Many times throughout the series, Goku has channeled his Saiyan rage into a ferocious yet calculated fighting style. It’s also notable that when fighting seriously or with the intent to kill someone, Goku is a lot more focused and a lot less comical, taking on an almost cold yet never sinister demeanor.

His rough training regime has led some to question his sanity at times, however. Even when he is down and beaten or recovering in the hospital, Goku would continue to train. Even if all he could do was push-ups or sit-ups. When he isn’t spending time with his family and friends, he spends his days and nights peacefully training, searching for the next level of power and mastering his own sense of being.

This pure-hearted mindset as he fights and trains is what has elevated him into becoming a legend amongst the Shōnen world. Whether it’s to eat ridiculous amounts of food in one sitting, encourage his friends to do their best and get stronger, being a loving father and husband or taking on the latest threat to the world, Son Goku can always be counted on to save the day. Or the Earth. Or the Universe.

Strengths

Physical: Despite being raised as a human, the fact that he is an alien from the Saiyan race inherently makes him stronger than most of humanity by default, though he isn’t without challenges. Over the course of the Dragon Ball series, Goku has gone from lifting massive boulders and cars over his head to being capable of shattering entire mountains with but a single blow from his fist, effortlessly. On a scale of sheer power, Goku is easily considered a planet buster, powerful enough that he could very well destroy the galaxy if he so chose to (of which he never would). Despite this strength, his speed is equally as impressive, capable of shattering the sound barrier and the speed of light after years of training. He is capable of high speed flight with the use of his ki (ki is not special to Saiyans as all living beings share this energy), one of the universe’s greatest martial artists and is capable of multiple techniques that use his ki or even the energy surrounding him. The most common of uses for Goku’s ki is for simple energy blasts with varying destructive powers (ranging from non-fatally stinging/pushing an opponent to even obliterating the opponent and the surrounding area) and his trademark technique, the Kamehameha Wave. While there have been many variations of this move, Goku’s primary use for it is to gather the latent energy in his body to his hands, charged by his side and let loose in an explosion of power as a beam hits the recipient for major damage. Unique to his Saiyan blood is the ability to receive a permanent and drastic boost to his power after surviving and recovering from fatal injuries, giving the impression that a Saiyan’s strength only continues to grow every time they fight.

Lastly there is the ability to power up, the feat in which Goku can both hide and increase his power level to both deceive and match the strength of his foes. This is taken further with techniques such as the Kaio-ken, taught to him by King Kai where he’s enveloped by a crimson aura and multiples his strength by the varying amounts of usage of the move (such as Kaioken x2, x4, x10, x20, etc.) This would become almost non-existent and dwarfed in comparison to the less risky but more rewarding transformation into the legendary form known as a Super Saiyan. In this form, Goku’s hair and eye color change, becoming a brilliant gold while his eyes take on turquoise color. His power drastically skyrockets in this form, multiplying 50x what his base power is. It would become his favored transformation, but was not his last one as his journey to become stronger lead him to greater heights, including mastering the initial Super Saiyan form and even reaching new levels altogether.

Goku’s speed and power increase in ludicrous amounts with each new transformation, able to ascend to levels Super Saiyan 2 and the drastically different Super Saiyan 3 if the battle deems it necessary. Most times these forms are required, Goku is fighting to kill his opponent when their evil ways cannot be swayed.

Recently though, Goku had managed to achieve one final transformation, achieved initially when he shared the power of five pure-hearted Saiyans. This form ushered in the wake of the Super Saiyan God, a form that couldn’t be maintained for long but surpassed even Super Saiyan 3. Goku’s hair turned a bright shade of pinkish red and his aura when powered up takes on an uncontrollable fiery nature. His appearance otherwise doesn’t change much, if anything his body grows slightly taller and his body more lean, his hair similar to what it is in base form. In this form he can sense the presence of gods (or godly ki) and utilize the same power. After powering down from this form, his other forms gained another permanent boost, even his base form as he seemingly absorbed some of the godlike power into himself.

There are many other physical strengths that Goku carries, but we would be here all day if each and every one were described.

Mental: Goku carries a truly unbreakable will. Once he has set his mind to something, it takes a considerate amount of effort to steer him from his task. In the face of a seemingly overpowering foe, Goku refuses to give up if it ultimately meant the destruction of the planet or his friends. Many times he has been beaten down to a bloody pulp only to get right back up and display amazing feats of strength, much of which comes from his sheer willpower alone. Driven to be the best and to protect all forms of innocent life and his family/friends, it only compliments his amazing never-say-die attitude. While not as cunning as his allies Piccolo or Vegeta, Goku is still a very capable and intelligent person when it comes to battle, exposing weaknesses with ease in many of his foes and formulating strategies to either incapacitate his foe or even to save others that are in danger because of them.

Goku is also capable of telepathy, of which he’s primarily shown in blasting away small chunks of land (to bury the once fallen Vegeta at the hands of Frieza) or even reading the minds of those he touches.

There also isn’t much that weirds Goku out as far as oddities are concerned, having traveled to multiple different planets and made friends with/fought multiple different types of aliens. There are also dinosaurs that roam the Earth in the wild that he’s likely captured/befriended/eaten.

Emotional: After his head injury as a baby that forever changed his personality and demeanor, Goku has since been surrounded by friends and family on a consistent basis. Goku, along with his unbreakable will, is also very emotionally stable. As a loving husband to the Ox King’s daughter, Chi-Chi and a father of two children, they remain a constant in his life during times of peace and when he isn’t training. Despite living an early sheltered life in the mountains and his bizarre personality traits to some, Goku is sociable with others, and his sense of morals are well-founded. By channeling his rage in battle, his technique is finely honed has been the cause of many of his power-ups throughout the series.

Whereas thoughts of despair would bring many others down, such nightmarish thoughts only serve to drive Goku harder to win. Thinking of what Frieza would do to his family and friends was enough to bring him back from the brink of death and drowning to a valiant effort in taking him down.

Weaknesses

Physical: Physically there aren’t many weaknesses that he carries as most conventional weapons such as guns and swords do next to nothing to him. The only way that they could do harm to him was if his power level was lowered enough that he could be injured by such things or if the weapons in question were powerful enough to pose a threat to him. In one incident, he was sleeping as a Super Saiyan and his best friend Krillin threw a rock at him, thinking he would destroy it with his mind. Needless to say, it was not the case and Goku was a cranky Super Saiyan. His primary physical weakness is only if you are close to as strong as he is to make him feel the attacks dished out to him. That being said, however, what weaknesses he does have comes from his own strengths. While his sources of energy are absolutely vast and at times seemingly limitless on the surface, Goku is still suspect to feeling drained after long battles.

Such weaknesses are even more apparent as he spends long periods of time fighting in his powered up states. While there’s next to zero weaknesses in fighting as a Super Saiyan (seeing as he’s fully mastered the form with no real strain to his body), forms such as Super Saiyan 3 rapidly consume his ki since he uses the form in a living body. If the battle is not ended quickly, he will eventually be left drained and vulnerable in his base form. This weakness can be countered in time as Goku trains himself to master this form just as he mastered the drain from being a Super Saiyan.

What would seem humorous to some is actually a genuine weakness that can evidently leave him drained and powerless against his enemies. With Goku’s appetite being as massive as it is, if he does not have something to eat or his stomach is running on empty as it were, his strength plummets and he continues to droll on about how hungry he is. While Goku will continue to fight and never give up, it’s still a glaring weakness if he is starving.

Also he hates going to the doctor. Because he has trypanophobia (a fear of needles or any other injections).

Mental: Goku would not fit in well in a modern society as he has yet to obtain a driver’s license (he can fly, but beside the point…) and does not have any motivation to find a real occupation asides from training (though he does take up radish farming at home after defeating Majin Buu). Being as naïve as he is too, his trust in others has led to him being betrayed multiple times when he has spared his enemies. Goku’s stability is only questioned, comically, by the presence of needles. While most times his stubborn streak is a blessing that has taken him through countless battles, it can lead to problems when he doesn’t know when to quit as he’s up against overwhelming opponents. While he admits defeat to Bills, God of Destruction, if it weren’t for the fact that the God’s stamina was used up, the planet would have been destroyed.

Emotional: Goku admittedly doesn’t share many emotional weaknesses, as even when things weren’t going his way he would channel his frustrations into coming up with a way to triumph. A prime example of this is when he and his son, Gohan, are on Kami’s lookout sensing the battles going on below. With Piccolo believed to be dead or close to it, Goku was able to think rationally and not let his emotions get the better of him, more intent on training with his son when their turn in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber was at hand so they could have a better chance at defeating Cell. Even when all hope is lost, Goku isn’t above a noble sacrifice if it meant saving his loved ones, able to see the good in most situations even when matters were their bleakest. If it came down to it however, his one main weakness would be his family and friends. He won’t fight using his full power unless he knew that no innocent lives were in danger or around to get in his way. If you were intending on defeating Goku by having him take a deadly blow that was intended for someone else, he wouldn’t hesitate to take it even if it was strong enough to take him down. His thirst for a strong opponent can also lead him into unexpected trouble at times, even underestimating some of his opponents. The most prominent of them all was his confrontation with the God of Destruction, Bills, who effortlessly defeated Goku even when he was a Super Saiyan 3 and using but a fraction (of a fraction) of his power.

Anything else?: Let’s get the biggest elephant in the room out of the way here. Even with a 50% cut to his power, Goku is absolutely BROKEN. But given the way Goku is in the first place, you guys won’t have to worry about me trying to blow up a planet or something. And unless a plot or event demands it in the future, there won’t be much use for Goku to transform into forms like Super Saiyan 3 or even Super Saiyan 2 (unless it’s for a demonstration). As for the recently established form known as Super Saiyan God, by Dragon Ball standards he literally gains the ki signal of a god and can sense similar godly ki along with absorb it into his own body. Canonly, the Super Saiyan God can only be realized when five pure-hearted Saiyans surround the one transforming and share their energy with the recipient. However, Goku is capable of briefly transforming back into the Super Saiyan God form a second time on his own, driven on by protecting the Earth and his loved ones.

For the sake of keeping things simple, Goku won’t be using the Super Saiyan God form for a long time or until an event would mandate the use of it.

SAMPLES

First Person: [Video]
[blank one second, it’s not long after that for a face to pop up in the journal. by now the Saiyan has gotten used to using things like this; he wasn’t a technologically dumb person anymore. he could handle the basics. but now’s not the time to marvel at the fact that Goku can use techbook things! he looks eager, if not a slight bit hopeful…]

Vegetaaa! I haven’t seen you for a week! What gives? You said that we were going to train again. I know our power levels were kind of taken down a peg, but remember what I said? If we just got as strong as we were when we were at full power before, it’ll be like we weren’t handicapped in the first place.

[Goku’s brow furrows some as he muses over the possibility]

I can only train by myself for so long before I need to see how far along I am and you’re one of the only people here that I know can keep me honest! Gee, it’s like you’re hiding or something…

[SUDDENLY, EPIPHANY!]

Ahahah… Why didn’t I think of this before? Seeya in a sec, Vegeta.

[suddenly, Goku places his index and middle finger to his forehead, seemingly concentrating before everything goes blank…only to instantaneously show Goku reappearing in what seems to be a completely different location. with a baffled Vegeta seen in the background]

There you are!

[and before Vegeta can proceed to rip Goku a new one, the entry closes!]

Third Person:
Slowly, he ascended from the ground, his dark gaze surveying the village and surrounding land. On the surface, this world looked no different from his own planet, but he knew better. Having already been informed about what was going on here in this world only known as Luceti, one captive in particular had no intention of staying for long. Though he had already attempted to use Instant Transmission to teleport straight out and beyond the barriers to no avail, for him there was but one more thing to test before he set off to test the limits of what bound him and the others here. High in the sky above, with the sheer power that the man was giving off, he wasn't exactly difficult to find. What started as a white aura flaring around his body eventually gave way to a more defining transformation...

"Haaahhhh..!!!"

In an explosion of power, it was Son Goku, enveloped by a golden aura as his hair changed from the untamed black spiky locks to gravity-defying blonde. The sheer intensity in the Saiyan's eyes as he continued to increase his power level was astounding. And yet for such a simple transformation into the first stage of a Super Saiyan, one would think that he was overdoing it with how loudly he was crying out, his rage channeled into a force of good will. Of raw willpower, his heart racing and beating for the sole purpose of never giving up. His body didn't change after this fact as his fists clenched and his power continued to rise. The surrounding air seemed to crackle and submit to him as even the grounds surrounding the warrior began to tremble. If this continued on any longer, his power would likely be felt across the entirety of Luceti. It was dangerous...this was a reckless idea being put to practice.

But if anyone could find a justification for it all, it was Goku. He was trapped here, his wings spread behind him as if to revel in the flared embrace of energy that radiated off his body, and he wasn't about to let this stand. If it didn't work, it meant he'd eventually have to try harder. If there were repercussions for such a bold statement, he wasn't thinking about them. He was thinking about defying the odds.

"Rrgh...rrrgh...!!"

His teeth clenched as his hair began to rise further, the aura that was once wild becoming more focused and jagged around him. Goku had already moved on to the next level. But this wasn't enough... No. It wasn't good enough.

(Less than 50% of my maximum or not, I have to at least try! I can't just stand here and do nothing... I...!)

Goku's eyes suddenly snapped wide as his very flesh itself was flashing gold, rapidly going quicker and quicker until the village below him began to tremble beneath his might. And that was when it happened. Reaching deep inside, despite how difficult doing such was in his current condition, the wings on his back felt like they had been set on fire, but he knew it was simply a backlash from what he was drawing out.

(I won't stand aside and do nothing!!)

"AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

The earth and sky both trembled, threatening to split before him as his hair grew out and a brilliant light flooded the surrounding area. To those that looked directly at him, they would see nothing but a flash, blinded by the sheer radiance that he was giving off. But it didn't take much longer after that for the surrounding area to finally settle. No longer was Luceti on the verge of an earthquake, and fortunately this time did not threaten to destroy the planet like it almost did when he was on Earth. But the end result was what he was looking forward. And despite being only at half his full strength, there in the sky, surrounded by lightning that flowed off his body and with hair that went past his waist...

This was the pinnacle of his training, an otherworldly form that was still difficult to maintain in a living body. Goku's demeanor had seemingly changed (though it was a mere front as the pure-hearted hero still remained), the Super Saiyan 3 surveying his surroundings before looking to his hands, trickling with electricity.

"That took too much effort," he gruffly mused to himself before setting his gaze out to the horizon. However far out the barrier was, he was going to be greeting it very soon. "I can already tell that I don't have much time, but this should be enough." Despite the inevitability in which he would fail, he still pressed on. And with that, faster than the human eye could properly perceive, he had vanished, speeding off beyond the village and off to uncharted territory, hoping that he had enough left in him to break whatever barrier held him and the others here.
